Which compost machine capacity do I need?

Estimate 0.3 to 0.5 Kg of wet waste per person per day, then choose the model that runs at 60–80% of capacity on an ordinary day. A 60-flat society producing about 50 Kg needs the SMART 50; a hotel producing 100 Kg needs the SMART 100.

How to choose the right capacity

Five steps. The third one matters more than the other four combined.

  1. Count the people your premises serves

    Residents, hotel covers, staff, or meals served per day. Every calculation works off this number.

  2. Apply the 0.3 – 0.5 Kg rule

    Multiply that headcount by 0.3 to 0.5 Kg for an estimate of daily wet waste. Use the lower figure for offices, the higher one for kitchens and restaurants.

  3. Weigh your actual waste for three days

    Weigh the wet waste bins for three ordinary days and take the average. This single measurement beats every formula, and it is the main reason buyers avoid paying for a machine larger than they need.

  4. Check power and space before capacity

    Only the VEER runs on single phase. Everything above 25 Kg/day needs a three-phase supply. If your site has no three-phase connection, that decides the model before capacity does.

  5. Size for the average day, not the peak

    Aim for 60–80% of rated capacity on a normal day. A machine loaded to the brim daily wears faster and composts less consistently. Festival or banquet peaks can run over two cycles.

Compost machine FAQs

Work on 0.3 to 0.5 Kg of wet waste per person per day. A 60-flat society generating around 50 Kg needs the SMART 50; a hotel producing 100 Kg needs the SMART 100. Always size to your actual daily average rather than your peak day — a machine running at 60 to 80 per cent of capacity lasts longer and composts more consistently than one loaded to the brim.

Compost machine price starts at ₹75,000 for the 10–25 Kg per day COMPOSTO VEER. A 50 Kg machine typically falls in the ₹1.5–2.5 lakh range, 100–200 Kg units between ₹3 lakh and ₹6.5 lakh, and the 500 Kg industrial model from ₹9,50,000. Turnkey 1–5 TPD plants are quoted per project. Price varies with body material, automation level and site conditions.

The VEER needs 12 to 18 sq. ft., the SMART 50 around 20 to 25 sq. ft., the SMART 100 about 50 sq. ft. and the SMART 200 roughly 80 sq. ft. Add about 3 ft of clearance on the service side for maintenance access, plus separate space for curing bins where the output matures for 10 to 15 days.

Only the COMPOSTO VEER runs on single-phase power, at 2 KW. Every larger model needs a three-phase connection — 3 KW for the SMART 50, 4 KW for the SMART 100 and 6 KW for the SMART 200. If your site has no three-phase supply, that constraint usually decides the model before capacity does.

The machine completes its automated cycle in about 24 hours and produces a stabilised, odour-free output. That output then cures for a further 10 to 15 days in curing bins before it becomes finished, mature compost ready for garden or bulk use.

Under Solid Waste Management Rules 2016, bulk waste generators — generally premises producing 100 Kg or more of waste per day, or campuses larger than 5,000 sq. m — must process wet waste on site. Many municipal corporations enforce this through occupancy and trade licence conditions.

They are the same equipment. Organic Waste Converter, or OWC, is the term used in Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 and in tender documents, while compost machine is the everyday commercial name. Both describe a machine that shreds, heats and mixes food and garden waste to produce compost on site.
